I only caught the last thirty min’s of this movie las night with J.Depp playing the part of J.Dilinger but was particularly impressed by the scenes where dilinger was walking away from the movie theatre.
Did anyone catch the close-ups at that part of the film. They just seemed unusual and brilliantly done. Also, is that called cinematography?
I thought it might be high digital with some special focusing and playback speed…but dont know for sure.
I haven’t seen the film, but it was released in 2009 and was shot on digital and film according to this site: Public Enemies (2009) Technical Specifications » ShotOnWhat?
But most online commentary refers only to the digital cinematography. And some clips I have seen look like video and not film.
If I read the site correctly it was recorded in Rec 709, which has less latitude for editing than log-encoded video or camera raw.

Well I thought it was most impressive and woth the effort, although I’m not so sure about the sound recording nor the continuity… in places.
"Format Switch: While the preceding walk-up was captured on Sony F23 digital cameras, director Michael Mann switched to an unblimped 35mm film camera (likely an ARRIFLEX 235 or 435) specifically for the moment the agent raises his gun and the camera moves in tight behind Depp.
Slow Motion & Handheld: This 35mm footage was shot in slow motion and handheld. The camera operator physically followed Depp’s movement, plunging downward in sync with his body as he was shot, creating a continuous, fluid motion that digital cameras of the time could not replicate with the same “furious” mechanical texture".
