Late model Corvette

I got my hands on a good camera and lens and went to a small, local auto show. I haven’t done a large amount of post processing. I’m pretty happy with everything except the sky. When I tried to use a parametric mask of a small patch of open sky, a lot of stuff (not just the sky) got a sort of mottled appearance. So, this example is without sky masking.

Bright sunshine and deep shadows. Given that I mostly tried to just pull the attention to the Vette, rather than away from everything else:

  • 16:9 crop to get rid of the sky and as much of the complex background as possible. Also to me (at least) it slightly helps accentuate the car’s “linear / fast / motion” feel.
  • Masks to raise the shadow range on the bottom of the car as well as pull the saturation to what I’m guessing might be about realistic.
  • A vignette and a slanting gradient (lower left) to direct attention to the car.
  • A little sharpening since f/2.8 doesn’t give too much margin.

Nice shot.

Back on my original post: I have made several more attempts on this image. The sky always gets messed up at my normal step of either Filmic RGB or Sigmoid, and I have tried both the v6 and v5 Color Science settings in Filmic. The sky always goes to a duller, stranger blue color. I’m really starting to doubt my usual methods.

I don’t think you get any vignette correction and its pretty bad… with the composition this is a good part of the sky…

Great braking disk!

Retro feel for a retro car.

Retro?

This is the image with minimal editing. This lighter, creamier orange is closer to what the car actually looked like than everyone’s (including my original) edits. I’m sorry about the cluttered background; the event was held at a local high school.

I had thought the camera was set to capture both raw and jpeg files, but when I went back to get an OOC jpeg, it had two copies of the raw image, instead.

I just virtually bought one… :)…

Yeah, that looks right. In my most recent post, I had neglected to apply contrast. But after applying contrast, my latest edit still makes it a too-saturated, redder orange.

I wish I had captured a jpeg with the camera. I know that’s not what we’re interested in here, but I’d like to know what the Nikon processing result was. Oh, well.
