Layers, and their uses

Greetings all,

I’m a self taught GIMPer, mostly with the help of Bernard’t Hooft’s video tutorials, but that was for version 2.10. In the past, I predominantly used GIMP at work, mostly because it was the only thing available, for working with imagery meant to go in technical documentation. So, the needs were limited to mostly selection, and masking.

Now that I’m retired, I’d like to learn more of the nuances of layers and how they might come into play in some of my images. I’ve never used Photoshop. Don’t know if that is a plus of a minus in this endeavor.

Is there a place where I could go to learn more about the power of layers, especially with the new capability introduced in v3.20?

Thank you in advance!

It’s a bit difficult to summarize all the new features in GIMP 3.2 compared to GIMP 2.X.

I’d recommend checking out the release notes for each of the two major versions; they do a great job of summarizing the new features, including NDE, Vector layers and Link layers. Every release note is very useful, but the biggest ones are the most important.

Davies Media Design used to be the go to YouTube channel on Gimp but his site has been quiet for awhile.
I found this 12hour guide that is a few months old so should be fairly up to date.
I’m still using 2.10.as I know my way around it. Most of the scripts no longer work. I keep telling myself to make the jump to 3.2!
Here’s this rather long tutorial https://youtu.be/C7dQfk6GMEM?si=6a6U21Bfwh-wAun6
