Lensfun calibration data for vintage lenses

Some of your vintage glass just got much better!
Specifically: if you are using it with a digital full frame camera and your post processing is done in Darktable, Rawtherapee (or any other software that uses the Lensfun library).
Lens artifacts like distortion and transverse chromatic aberrations (TCA) can easily be fixed in digital post processing - but, of course, only is the calibration data exists. While the Lensfun library has such data for (almost) all modern lenses, only very little is available for beautiful vintage glass. Therefore, I obtained this data for a set of 26 vintage German lenses from Carl Zeiss Jena, Meyer-Optik Görlitz, Schneider-Kreuznach, Steinheil München, and a few more. The procedure is described on my blog, together with figures of the results and instructions how to download and install the .xml file with the lens data which can be used in Darktable to apply these corrections:

Now, my Meyer-Optik Görlitz Orestor 2.8/100mm is not only very sharp, it also got rid of its strong pincushion distortion - a huge improvement!

These figures show the distortion corrections for the ~50mm lenses

and for the ~90mm lenses

Very cool and thank you for sharing. Do you have plans to contribute this to the lensfun project?

Thank you! And, yes, I did - and the Lensfun people were really fast. Most of these are now already included, so a simple “sudo lensfun-update-data” gives you access to everything.
