Got it to work for a short moment, but immediately lost it again. I fear if I try to keep it for a longer time in focus, I get a serious headache.

Thanks - so, assuming say 0.15 mm pixel pitch, the cat’s noses subtend about 25 degrees in your case and 35 in mine at my normal viewing distance of 45 cm.
