Hi
Open a JPEG file and make some simple changes to exposure and add IPTC description.
Save the changes to the same JPEG file (after confirming I do want to overwrite existing file)
Check the Exif metadata and it has been wiped completely, also checked using exiv2 and no Exif metadata!!!
Have captured what I’ve done in short screen capture video clip but not sure if I can post it here or not (or how). I would have thought regardless of any settings I may have incorrectly set it would NOT wipe Exif metadata.
Side problem is that since yesterday trying to open rawpedia:rawtherapee I get “Account suspended” message!! Do I send email to the webmaster there as it suggests. Have no idea what that’s about.
Many thanks in advance
I tested a jpeg and added IPTC description in RawTherapee 5.13 RC-1 and could not replicate. The exif was not stripped and the IPTC shows correctly in RT. My metadata copy mode is “Apply modifications”, I hope you didn’t set it to “strip all metadata”.
From what I can see, rawpedia.rawtherapee.com is depreciated (at lease for now), the new Rawpedia is at rawpedia.pixls.us.
Metadata copy mode is set to Apply modifications and couldn’t find any other relative setting or cause.
Captured my screen and put onto Youtube to show what happens and settings at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DnEgvQjn82E
Will use digiKam to do metadata editing, just can’t figure if RawTherapee has a but or operator error
Regards Ron
By default Rawtherapee doesn’t copy all metadata to the jpg. You have to check the boxes in the meta data panel. This can then be saved to a auto applied preset.
Is this the issue you’re having? When trying new versions etc I often forget this setting and end up exporting files lacking metadata.
This seems to be an issue only when overwriting the source image. It might be happening because RawTherapee tries to read the metadata again after it has started overwriting the file. This fails because the original metadata has already been erased.
I’m assuming what you mean is saving it to a new file? I’m trying to just update the description in the IPTC tab and save it to the same filename so gets overwritten. I wouldn’t think this should/would delete existing Exif information. But parts of Exif information did have ticks next to them prior to the save operation, then after it was if Exif did not exist. Hopefully can see what I mean in the video I put up (see above for address)

Tried 5.13-rc1 and no change for me, Exif is still wiped out.
Have to ensure that “Automatically add a suffix if the file already exists” in NOT enabled, and refresh the RawTherapee edit screen otherwise you still see Exif data that I assume was still in some cache or something.
Tried reading more from RawPedia but didn’t shed any light for other possible settings.
I’m thinking maybe Lawrence37 is correct but I have no idea about the code and what it is supposed to do. Just believing Exif data should not be wiped.
