Marking in-progress vs completed album in digiKam

There is currently an ongoing discussion how to mark in-progress collections in darktable.

This is something, I’ve been thinking about for a while as well but with respect to digiKam. My typical workflow is:

  1. Import pictures from camera into event-based folders
  2. cull, add ratings, tags, etc.
  3. potentially process some of the photos

Between each step some considerable amount of time may pass, so I’m looking for a way to keep track of the status of each album (e.g. “just imported”, “fully culled and tagged”, “everything processed”, …).

To my understanding, digiKam currently doesn’t have an option to add tags or colour labels to albums, but there is already the option to add one of the pictures of the album as album thumbnail, which will replace the standard folder icon. Is it also possible to choose an icon that is not one of the photos in the album? If not, adding an option for this might be an easy way to provide some way to mark albums (e.g. if I could set folder icons in different colours).

Or would it be better to add proper colour labels independent of the icon (so I could mark albums and still have a photo as thumbnail at the same time)?

What do others think? Is this a feature that would be of general interest? Or is there maybe already a way to do this, which I’m not aware of?

Late reply, sorry. You should be able to assign categories for albums and search for those. Now create a category for yet unprocessed albums and assign that, remove after processing.

I never really figured out how to actually use categories. How can I list albums of a certain category? All I found is that I can sort by category but that doesn’t seem very useful to me (especially since the category of an album seems not to be displayed anywhere).
