Merge layers without flattening

In GIMP, is there a way to flatten layers without merging them, to create a new “summary” layer? I used that all the time in Photoshop, and miss it dearly.

Is the “New from Visible” item in the Layers menu what you’re looking for?

You can do layer groups.
