Meta Data gone after export

To reproduce:

  • import an image
  • see at the left side all the metadata from the camera including pic-taking-date
  • export the image
  • check the date of the new file: All metadata from the camera are lost
I tried a lot of configuration and settings. None is able to show the original metadata especially the image-taking-date in the new image.
To clarify: I want to take the data from the exif of the imported-image and I want to write it to the exif-data of the edited image, just as “pass-through”.

Thank you for hints.

I had darktabe 5.0 and upgraded to 5.01, without any change.

What are your export preferences? (The options in the menu of the module)

Which export format ? JPG ? Did you read darktable user manual - export section Caution ?

I tried it all: Jpeg-Vars, png, …
I tried to set options and I hit “return to default” for the options.
The exif-data of the camera are not written to the new exif-file-part.

If there is a way to “save all options” and “reset all preferences”, I would be happy to do so. I try since one week to keep my exif-information.

Just to be clear, the metadata export options are accessed in the export module under “preferences”, which you reach through the “hamburger” menu in the upper right corner of the export module (where you also handle preferences, it’s the last item in that menu).

That particular dialog has no “reset” option, afaik, and resetting the export module does not reset the metadata settings.

And while some tags may fail to export, the EXIF information shouldn’t pose problems…

If that’s not the issue, you may want to check your versions of exiv2 (and exiftool?), and perhaps generate some debug output from darktable: a quick test shows no issues for me with metadata in exported files.

solved!
Thank you so very much.
The solution was “hamburger menu in the upper right corner”. This was it, what did not show up for me, because the idea to click there did not come up to my mind.

I too learnt something new today. I never realised the preference options existed there.
