I’ve been working on monopro, a macOS RAW/TIFF processing application built specifically for editing in grayscale and with a focus on monochromatic inkjet and alternative printmaking workflows.
The pipeline runs in Linear Rec2020 float32 with perceptual L* encoding at export, and includes a dodge & burn system designed around EV stops rather than opacity painting. Tone mapping modes include Linear, Multigrade, and custom curve.
As part of the project I’ve also released monostar — an ICC v4.4 grayscale output profile that uses a parametric L* TRC rather than the usual gamma approximations. To our knowledge it’s the first openly distributed grayscale ICC profile of this kind; released to the public domain under the Creative Commons CC0 1.0 Universal license. The app profile set also uses eciRGB v2 ICCv4 (ECI) for toned exports and Clinton Ingram’s excellent compact DisplayP3 v4 (CC0) for jpg proofs. Details and the math behind monostar are here:
