Trying to edit this pic in B&W but can’t seem to make the subject stand out much from the background. Would love to see your versions! MAT01332.ARW (24.0 MB)
Welcome @Mathul ! If you are using darktable (and maybe RawTherapee? I dont know), make sure to avail yourself of the parametric masking features. They can really help with seperation.
There are a lot of stylistic ways you can go with this photo which makes for great fun (for us at least!) Thanks!

Hiya, I’m using darktable, this is what I’ve got using a hell of a lot of all kinds of masks - tried to lighten the background to increase separation in the end. Trying to start a B&W series from my travels so may be posting more pics to see how I could’ve edited things differently / better. Always keen to improve…

PS - this is a slightly different pic which I think I eventually decided I preferred
@mathul you need to assign the raw file to creative commons for people to “legally” modify/edit the file. Something like this

Or with filmic

Dup>Exclusion setting top layer. Made a new layer of the visable and set it to lighten and adjusted the Exclusion layer to tasted. Also, did some selective enhancements as well.
I wanted to have a wash of color on the man. My masking is a little bit dodgy. BTW, the man in the image isn’t named Khaled by any chance. He looks very much like my guide when I travelled in Morocco last year. A destination I would recommend to any photographer. And for lovers of beer try Cassablanca Lager. I nice drop.
