New compact cameras - announcement roundup

Dude, the Pedtail has seventy-five point space zero megapixels! I’ve put one on order, screw the GR IV!

As a rule, I do not read reviews that only contain stock photos. These reviewers have never had the item in their hands, and are just riffing off the spec sheets.

This particular review, however, isn’t even trying to be reasonable in any way. It’s equal parts hilarious and sad and baffling. I think I got a sort of bewildered chuckle out of it, though, so… Thanks, I guess.

Yes, the Pedtail caught my eye too. As I’m not a professional, it sounds perfect for me:

“this camera hits the sweet spot between smartphone cameras and expensive professional gear”
“Might be too basic for professional photographers”

It really is hilarious.

I love that one of the cons of the $40 Camkory camera is “Image quality isn’t professional grade”

But I agree, it’s sad as well. Some people will buy these toys expecting it to be better than their smartphone.

I love the “16x digital zoom lens” 10/10

Did they change the preoder date for the GR IV? B&H used to say “Wed 20th 6pm EST” but now it just says “coming soon”

The more I read, the more I love it:

“No weather resistance for extreme conditions”
So non-extreme drizzle would be fine?

“Some units develop lens errors”
How many units did they try? My guess is a big fat zero.

“Plastic construction feels somewhat fragile”
“Build feels lightweight and less durable”
“Can feel a bit plastic compared to premium models”
Hmm, bit of a theme there with these sub-$100 cameras!

“Video stabilization could be better”
Pretty sure that could be said of a Leica too.

But what I really love is the “mega pixels” because they’re no ordinary pixels. They’re really big ones!

Don’t know, but yesterday I watched Samuel Streetlife’s first impressions of the build and feel of it. It was interesting to see that it is slightly thinner. It also seems to be a bit snappier as expected.

I’d love to have a play with it before committing to buying it. I’ve never held a GR in my hands, and not sure I can find one near me.

Not even that. “Best X (for Y)” lists of this kind are usually autogenerated from user reviews on amazon.com and similar.

The purpose is income from referrals.

I have preordered the GR IV. My wallet says “ouch tarrifs”

Something like this (B&H):

I just checked a couple of Canadian sites, and I don’t see any pre-orders being available on them.

Sorry :sob:

LOL no worries, I won’t be getting one anyway. For me, a viewfinder is a must.

Kerrisdale Cameras in Vancouver has preorders available for CAD $1899.
That’s about $500 more than the GRIII, which I think is more than they originally estimated, so looks like we’re eating tariffs as well.

I assume I’ll be selling my GR III when the IV arrives, if anyone is interested.

We’re “winning” ™ :

I feel like everyone’s losing at the moment, except for some very wealthy people :weary:

@europlatus I see $1899 in Toronto as well.

@elGordo Not bad relatively. With ON HST (13%), that would be $2,145.87.

Still quite expensive. I could get a decent laptop (by my standards), which has a much higher markup in Canada compared to the US.

The key word is

If only you lived in europe  Shipping + tax will most likely make it not worth it sadly
