Hi all , for those of you thinking about upgrading or even purchasing the latest version 6 , be warned …
One of the new features is that you can create a high fidelity DNG … to save space on your drives .
Well fine … but at least DT can´t read those DNG´s .
So keep that in mind before you decide
I saw this comment in Robin’s recent video just out…
“Thanks! I upgraded from 3 to 5 two days ago and luckily got this one for free. What a massive difference in file size. My first test with an XT5 RAF was 115MB with version 5, and only 12.5MB with version 6. Also, I managed to import the compressed version into Capture One 16.3.8, in case anyone was wondering”
I assume that these are demosaiced files? Wouldn’t mind trading 20MB per RAW for imperceptible degradation in quality, but having the files demosaiced is a bit of a turn off since it reduces a lot of future flexibility especially as we have already seen in this forum a really good neural network to deal with Fuji raws.
Demosaiced files are usually larger since they contain three channels, but lossy linear DNGs using JXL compression might explain the extreme shrinkage @priort mentions.
…which are spec v1.7 DNGs, which has been around for years now.
Yes … you can choose between the normal DNG and the so called high fidelity DNG .
Regarding the question about the demosaicing … they are for sure demosaiced , no demosaicing take place once they are exported into another raw editor .
Correct! With the -lossyMosaicJXL and -jxl_distance 6 option in the Adobe DNG Converter CLI I was able to create a 832 KB still mosaiced 40 MP file. -jxl_distance 0.1 (highest quality) and -jxl_effort 9 gave a 13,4 MB X-T5 file.
Without trying to sound rude or ungrateful - Is this issue likely to be resolved? I do like pre-processing my images in PR before using dt & was overjoyed to see this new compression option meaning instead of my Sony files being 120 odd meg after PR they are just 15ish!
Obvs my excitement somewhat dampened finding out I couldn’t open them in dt
It is the same with i.e. Canon cRAW files … not supported for a longer time within DT and after a while they added support .So you need to be patient .
There are a lot of YouTubers , who state that there is no or virtually no difference between the two DNG´s … which is not the case proven by other YouTubers . Well well … whom to trust .
At the moment no question … as long as DT does not support the HF DNG´s
Can’t they just run a diff between the two DNG’s? It would clearly show the differences between them, if they exist. Why compare by eye when tools exist?
I’ve been playing with the PR6 trial version and the size reduction in the high fidelity DNGs is impressive, but no good to me if DT can’t read them.
And the noise reduction performance isn’t substantially better the the PR4 edition, although PR6 has some new masking capabilities. Not enough of an improvement to make me upgrade, but my mind isn’t fully made up yet
Unfortunately for me I watched Andy Hutchinson’s review & decided it was good to upgrade from 4 to 6, but without even giving it thought about dt not being able to open them
There is a possibility right now that delivers also quite small files using lossy compression.
Just use Adobe DNG Converter with lossy compression on your normal PureRAW DNG’s.
I have tested it with a 70 megabyte DNG produced in PureRAW 4.0 and after using Adobe DNG Converter, the resulting DNG file was less than 8 megabytes; also I could see almost no difference from the original.
Important note: for darktable to read it at the present time, the compatibility chosen on the converter has to be “Camera Raw 14.0” or less (the newer 15.3, and 16.0 use “jpeg xl”, and darktable is not able to read them yet).
