I’ve just looked on Greg Girard’s insta and realised I’ve got his City of Darkness book on the Kowloon Walled City. Thanks for the tip. I didn’t know about his other work. Fantastic

Just rewatched Collateral the other night (still incredible); can’t wait to revisit Miami Vice! And I’m envious you’ve got one of Greg’s books! Love the way he uses cyan and magenta casts in his night compositions—often looks otherworldly.

I got it partly because I lived in HK for a while after the walled city was razed and it was such a mesmerising idea. I’m going to look through the photos again today with your observations in mind. Thanks

My attempt with darktable, inspired by the thread about Liam Wong:

It turned out to be much more difficult than I first thought…

Yes, it’s tricky. Bright highlights and dark noisy shadows. I metered for the highlights but still. I had a second go after seeing other people’s efforts here.

After seeing that DT 4.6 was released, I had to come back to this photo to play around with the new RGB primaries. I just added one instance on top of the edit from earlier and simply randomly pulled around sliders to see what happens without much thinking… I think I like this version a bit better than the first one.

I like your edit a lot! While I was looking at the XMP, I stumbled on another take on it by just decreasing the exposure and cropping closer:
