Yeah I know, another one. I read the “whole host of photo editors” thread so I get it.
I shoot fujifilm (X-T5, X-T20) and I’m on linux with GNOME, and I never really found an editor that has fuji as the main focus instead of something that just also works. So I started building one for myself with claude, mostly because I wanted to see if I could. It turned out to be way more fun than I thought, and at some point it got good enough that maybe someone else can use it too.
To be clear, claude wrote all the code, I’m not a rust developer, I work as a product designer. How it works is in docs/ENGINEERING.md if you’re interested (scene-linear pipeline, tone curve fitted to the camera jpegs, full res x-trans demosaic, the lens corrections fuji puts in the raf, that kind of stuff).
Right now it’s linux only and I’ve mostly tested it on my own pc with fuji and sony files, so I honestly don’t know yet how it does on other setups. That’s kind of why I’m posting here. There’s a flatpak, an appimage and packages for most distros, it’s GPL-3 and everything runs locally.
Besides the editor there’s also Numa Home, a small server (one docker container) for your NAS so everyone in the house can see the photos in a browser, edits included. I run it on my own NAS. You can send photos to it straight from Numa and pull a library back in to keep editing. I’m also working on a Mac and iPhone/iPad version, that one is a separate app and won’t be open source. Next for the linux version is mostly Numa’s own camera profiles for more cameras and HDR on HDR screens.
Would love to hear from other fuji shooters especially. And thanks to everyone on raw.pixls.us, all the screenshots use your samples
Please, someone tell Claude that brevity is a virtue…
I went in looking for how the lens distortion corrections work and apparently it just fits the distortion to the embedded jpeg instead of using metadata?
Yeah all the docs are just… Do you really need 7k lines of features? Did you ever actually go through those, by the way? like what the hell does the description of “FLOW-018” here mean Numa/docs/FEATURES.md at main · simmmmm/Numa · GitHub
Fair criticism, thanks. To answer @bazdesh, I used to but then it went so fast during a period I wasn’t intending on even making the repo public so I just kind of gave up. Claude had put all tickets and everything in there I see. I’ve built this for myself so if it worked for me on my machines I was happy. Just thought I’d share it if people are somehow interested.
The (reviewed) README is short, and how it works is in docs/ARCHITECTURE.md. The engineering notes are no longer in the repo as they weren’t meant to be published, that was an oversight on my end.
@CarVac on the lens corrections: Numa reads the correction tables the camera writes into the RAF, and uses LensFun for other makes. The camera JPEG was only used once, to work out the scale of those undocumented tables. It isn’t fitted per photo.
