Odd editing quirk in dev versions

When doing relatively minor edits (tweaking a curve, white balance, noise reduction, whatever) in recent dev versions, the editor in updating the preview image insists on starting over from scratch - right down to demosaicing, capture sharpening and so forth.
Especially when working on modest hardware, the resulting lag makes even minor edits rather cumbersome.
The stable version (5.9) does not behave in this manner, it just updates the preview with the current edit which in most cases is almost instantaneous.

I can’t exactly pin down when this quirk first appeared, but as far as I remember it wasn’t present in the 5.8 dev versions.

Is there any specific reason for this behavior (i.e. it is intended) or could this be considered a bug?

Edit: Currently 5.9-217 on Win 7

Are you using inpaint opposed highlight reconstruction? Coincidentally, I opened an issue on GitHub about this around the same time as your post.

I’m indeed using inpaint opposed, however not consciously so: it appears to be the default in this paerticular dev version.

When I change it back to the previous default - IIRC “Blend” - the quirk disappears.
