On hosting your work

I’ve grown tired of Instagram and the like, just the disgusting panopticon that is social media in general

Flickr and the rest all seem to have pretty limiting upload limits, and I’m dead-broke right now

To those of you who run websites, what do you host it on? how did you build them?
To the others, what alternative image hosting services do you use?

I’ve found a website by the name of 35Photo, which is truly excellent, looks even better than Flickr, and has no upload limit that I know of, unfortunately though, can’t sign up with an alternative e-mail service like Proton due to Russia (the country of origin of 35Photo) banning most e-mail providers, and I refuse to use Google services on principle

I host a Publii blog on Uberspace with an INWX domain. This works well.

I am using Hugo and I’ve spent two years designing my new theme that isn’t done. That’s too long and I suck at finishing things.

Its hosted on a hetzner vps with porkbun for the domain name.

I self host Immich, which runs as a Docker container on my modest Linux server. There is an iOS app which syncs with our iPhones. Immich is FOSS.

I access remotely using Tailscale. Tailscale is a commercial app with a generous free tier.

Another Immich user here - but that is only for my personal/family photos. I have also created a website for my “hobby” photography with Piwigo. Everything is hosted on a Synology NAS but could be hosted on anything that can be used as a server. Total cost is less than $15 per year to register my domain name.

I have used Hugo in past, and hosting on GitHub. With a public repository, you can use that for free and even use a custom domain.

It depends on how you use it and who your audience is.

For my website, I use Hugo and a custom theme.

To share photos with my friends and family, I use Immich.

To share high-resolution photos (e.g. for printing), I use an alternative to WeTransfer called Erugo.

Doesn’t Flickr free have a limit of 1000 photos? That doesn’t seem very limiting. You could upload just your best photos there and be very selective.

But I’m not a fan of platforms and just bought my own domain with hosting a long time ago. You can get some pretty cheap plans but it’s hard to find a good free one.

Ultimately I’ve found that sharing photos on the internet is not fulfulling so I just went the old fashioned way: sharing them offline with people I know. (The main exception is stuff I do for work.)

I simply use hugo for my blog and github to host my photos and blog contents. Everything then build on netlify and release. So everything is free except the domain I purchased one time. I think keeping it simple will give you more time on photography.
