OpenCL optimization 4.3/4.4

The documentation has not changed for the new values or changes incorporated in recent master build. Also I am not able to understand how to set the opencl_device_priority values. The documentation writes about 4 values but darktable-cltest shows 5, i.e. image preview export thumbs preview2. In my case there are 2 plateforms

can someone please write an in-depth guide as to how the values should be set?
What values to look for in the cltest output?
how darktable internally sets the values?
Are we suppose to change any values manually ?

There are many questions like this and the documentation is very brief and cryptic.

Following is my cltest output. I am experimenting with different values so the opencl_device_priority values may not be proper But I have observed that playing with different values many a times the thumbnails and/or histogram or even the main image will not show and in each time the last value would be * (like 1,* or 0,1,*) then why as a last resort DT is not using the CPU?
Please if someone can give better understanding.

The docs are mostly the work of one person, thus they are not updated for the master branch.

When you choose run master, you’re accepting that you may have to tinker without docs.

Have you tried looking through the github PRs for relevant merges?

Preview2 is only relevant if you use a 2nd window for preview.


Mine is set to

opencl_device_priority=+0/+0/+0/+0/+0

to run everything on the GPU.

darktable does fall back onto the CPU if the GPU does not complete the computation quickly enough. The timeout is defined by

opencl_mandatory_timeout=20000

That’s not the default value; I increased it so darktable does not fall back to the CPU too quickly (with large images, diffuse or sharpen can take time, but falling back to the CPU would mean much longer processing times):

time period (in units of 5ms) after which we give up try-locking an opencl device for mandatory use. defaults to 400 (2 seconds).

In your priority setting you force darktable to prefer the intel on-cpu gpu over the dedicated gpu. Not the best idea if performance counts :wink:

to speed up processing you might use different priorities for full and preview pixel pipe especially when doing previews with reduced resolution

I tried it and there is no image shown even if I export there is a blank image

When my device priority was to use only Intel GPU everything was working (slow) but there was an Image.

TLDR your rusticl version doesn’t work, wait for the next mesa release. By default mesa disables rusticl for radeonsi, you should have enabled it manually using the related environment variable or the package you used changed this default.

Yes I added the environment variable to radeonsi. Will wait for next release of MESA driver :weary:
