Opening NEF files : beginner's stumbling block

I know this will be painfully simple. Running rawtherapee under debian. When I navigate in the file browser I am not seeing my nef files. I need to type in the full directory name in the freetype field at the top. See image :

What am I missing?

OK ā€¦Iā€™m an idiot. have to double click it seems in the directory hierarchy.
