It would be great to include some G’MIC nodes in the opensource Animation software OpenToonz FX Schematic?
Since both are open source, there shouldn’t be a technical problem with adding gmic, only a problem of finding someone to do the work. Of course that person is welcome to come and query the hive mind here.
OpenToonz currently only has one maintainer who mostly does bug fixes are adds Studio Ghibli Fx.
though I know they have a plugin SDK https://github.com/opentoonz/plugin_sdk
as far as finding someone to do it I have no clue who is capable of achieving something like this?
How big is the demand? We have a few people maintaining plugins. @David_Tschumperle
Many would like to see it happen besides me.
Chiming in here as someone that assists with development of Opentoonz although not much of a programmer myself.
Regarding the demand. Addition of Gmic is one of those feature sets that users don’t really know they need until they have access to it. How to best gauge demand then? Not sure.
Opentoonz itself has enjoyed very large interest from its initial release in 2016 although there was a sharp drop in interest as potential users discovered: 1) The program needed considerable work to finish its move to open source 2) Animation is hard.
G’mic is one of those feature sets that is simple on the surface but as complex as you can make it underneath. Opentoonz users would use Gmic for basic processes but fewer would dive into the complexity of truly using it. The primary gain would likely be for small studios who would discover their interest in Gmic and begin to use it.
I don’t have access to the official numbers of downloads of Opentoonz but I do see the activity of various social channels to include several active discord related to Opentoonz and it’s most active fork Tahoma2D. If Gmic was added to Opentoonz it’s fair to say it would immediately be ported over to Tahoma2D and interest would grow even further.
Raw numbers… we’d have to either guess at or investigate. Shun Iwasawa, the current maintainer of Opentoonz and employee of Studio Ghibli could tell you more about actual usage. His particular interest in special effects and the Schematic (node module) of Opentoonz would allow for direct feedback regarding integration issues.
For my part, I know Gmic in Opentoonz would be useful to every user (learning curve notwitstanding for more complex usage). It’d be very useful to me personally too.
