I’m still trying to figure out Darktable in detail, but I constantly lack inspiration and experience to do something cool, co I just end up doing basic stuff like denoise, sharpening, contrast & saturation. This is one where I spent a little bit more time creating masks and fine-tuning.
For me, the moon is a non-event in this picture. If I wanted the moon in this picture I would do two separate exposures and combine the flower and the moon images back together as the camera had no chance of capturing both in a single shot. AS8_8811.NEF.xmp (14.7 KB)
I like this a lot! It looks like what I was trying to achieve, but whenever I upped the exposure on the background, it seemed to mess everything up, no matter how much I struggled with masks.
I was thinking of doing another exposure, but the moon looked tiny (like a small dot), so it didn’t make much sense to me. At least wide open it feels like it has presence in the photo.
@Popanz if I wanted the moon in the shot you have demonstrated what I would do. A white blob doesn’t work for me because the viewer doesn’t know if it is the moon or a stray light source in the background.
I hope not! The best way would have been to use an extra light source for the flowers to make the dynamic range smaller. My shown image is a fake and it is pretty simple to proof that it is a fake. Just open it in darktable and raise the exposure:
Yes, I could have worked less obvious. But that’s not the point. So in the end the way @mlenard did it is the better way. Here it is clear that it is a compositing.
