Performance of NVIDIA vs AMD (recent GPUs)

I’m currently running DT on Linux with a NVIDIA 4070 Ti Super. For Linux gaming I’m starting to lean towards AMD and was wondering how big of a gap in performance there was with recent AMD GPUs such as the 7900XTX.

I did some research and all I could find were comparison of old GPUs.

I would check phoronix’ opencl benchmarks.

Based on these graphs I understand that the 7900XTX would perform better on most occasions than a 4070 Ti Super.

Also consider whether the AMD drivers will be available to darktable in your setup. E.g. for FlatPak, they are not. See this recent thread (also mentions AppImage):

OTOH if you do not use Flatpak/AppImage then AMD drivers may work well. rocm for Radeon RX 6600 works fine for me on Fedora 41, DT is built from sources.

I’m not using darktable on Linux but I do have a 7900XTX and it works just fine with darktable in Windows. I’m not sure exactly what darktable uses opencl / GPU for vs using CPU, but with the exception of the diffuse and sharpen module on some more intense settings, I haven’t really noticed any issues.

Since you mentioned gaming as well, the 7900XTX is a beast for gaming in my experience.

My RX 7800 XT + Ryzen 7 7800x3D also works flawless with darktable on Windows 11.
