Pixls.us Home Page - Does it need changing?

When I accidentally offer advice online to a professional on the subject is a special kind of facepalm.

:rofl: i. e. a “+1” for a world-wide pixls.us community pub (meaning :beers:) meeting :grin:

:smiley: Well, no one really knows much about me on here, and I take no offence. Although, now that I’ve shared that tidbit, I’ll be even more wary of submitting an article! “I thought this guy was a professional writer. How do we tell him this reads like crap…?”

Or worse, you are now the de-facto editor and proof reader.

And on that note, I’m taking the inspiration from this topic to flesh out an article idea. I need to make many screenshots but the outline is mostly complete and I’ve been fleshing out the content.

To add to that, no one asked me to improve the darktable FAQ. I just realised it was a mess and did something about it, cleaning it up and writing new content (that I’m sure no one reads :sweat_smile:). Planet darktable was also something that I just did and then asked if there was interest in having it on the official darktable.org domain, which clearly there was.

You could try making it a semi-collaborative effort à la AgX.

Planet darktable is incredible. Well done for this. It’s a go to site for me (and of course here, :grin:)

Do I have as much patience as @kofa? That is the question! :slight_smile:

Yes, that level of feedback would drive me nuts no matter how helpful. I guess could post a proposed structure in bullet point, get feedback, adjust, maybe get volunteers to write each section, pull into whole. Post for error-checking and any major suggestions for improvement.

Yes to all of this.

The main site has been languishing with a re-design effort that is mostly complete but not pushed just yet. There is nobody to blame but me, really.

I do have some new ideas (some from this thread in fact) about how we might re-do the site in general, which is just another form of action paralysis I know…

(Now try to imagine the frustration of @paperdigits and @darix having to work with me!)

I’d love to reconsider the primary site and make it smoother and easier for others to contribute content and hopefully raise it from the dead.
Beware - much as it happened to me with the GIMP team, if you show willingness to help and work you will be chained to the wall and given ownership! :wink:

I suppose we could open a topic here to begin discussing a redesign and approach. I could jot down some notes and general design ideas for moving forward and as I get some motivation I could hack at it. I’ll try to find some time in the next couple of days to start a topic and see if we can get the ball rolling.

Also, thank you @bminney for kick starting the effort!

And in fact I do believe @bminney was kind enough to buy me a pint the last time I was in the UK. :slight_smile: He’s also been one of the oldest supporters around (he’s literally in the top 20 original members here). :smiley:

TBH why start a new thread . keep using this one. later if you are wondering what got you into this thread you can scroll up to get the reminder. So folks. push up your sleeves and get out your editors. It is time to help @patdavid and @paperdigits to finish the theme. Who will do what?

First order of business:

polling time:

  • Stick with github
  • Use the workspace we already have on gitlab
  • Codeberg because their CEO hasn’t said anything weird yet like the others.

for gitlab and forgejo (codeberg) we can easily run our own action runner. github is a bit of a pain.

Vote now!

It would definitely be useful to me at least to have a sort of “state of the site” post that covers the technologies, goals, ways to contribute, etc. Whether that’s in this topic or not doesn’t really matter to me.

I’m a web app developer so I’m no stranger to HTML, CSS, JavaScript, static site generators, etc. For me it’s more about knowing what specifically needs done and how I can help.

Frankly, @patdavid we should just merge the redesign as-is, and let the bits annoy the community into fixing them :upside_down_face::heart_eyes::hot_face:

I got out of web development, I’m more of a professional server toucher these days, but I do still know how to do stuff. I think there’s plenty of hands to do all kinds of things, it just needs to be prioritized/triaged maybe?

we also touch servers. mostly via salt :smiley:

later today I will add the automation for the forgejo runner so that also have that managed via salt.

to be prepared for the poll results. … we have the tooling ready to deploy our hugo pages also codeberg/forgejo!

# https://forgejo.org/docs/next/user/actions/
on:
  push:
    branches:
      - hugo
jobs:
  pages:
    runs-on: hugo
    env:
      DEPLOY_KNOWN_HOSTS: ${{ secrets.DEPLOY_KNOWN_HOSTS }}
      DEPLOY_KEY: ${{ secrets.DEPLOY_KEY }}
      DEPLOY_TARGET: ${{ secrets.DEPLOY_TARGET_STAGING }}
    steps:
      - uses: https://data.forgejo.org/actions/checkout@v4
        with:
          submodules: true
      - run: cd themes/hugo-bootstrap-bare/assets; npm install; cd ../../../;
      - run: hugo --config config.yaml -b 'https://staging.pixls.us/' -d public
      - run: hugo-deployer

It also uses our normal hugo containers

"hugo:docker://registry.opensuse.org/home/darix/apps/containers/hugo:latest"

and the hugo compression + deploy script (the scripts are in our container so you dont have to manually ship it)

and the neato part is … we can share this workflow file with all projects and just set some variables in the secrets settings of the repository.

We had a few pints in that amazing pub! I ended up in Mayfair struggling to get to Victoria Station! Happy days and taught me the benefit of going out with other photographers just taking photos (oh and meeting some of the brains behind GIMP and darktable). Let me know next time you are here

+1 For Salt! We’re building the new platform with it, I like it a better than Ansible so far.

if someone wants to work on something …

  1. it is incomplete.
  2. the forums link is wrong
  3. maybe we could show each project we helped with a short summary or so. to be discussed with @patdavid and @paperdigits

also please test the staging page and report other issues you see there :slight_smile: compare to the normal page if we lost formatting or so on.
