Hi Ingo,
Thank you for that excellent overview of the steps you took in processing the image. I’m going to follow your outline and see how close I can get to your results.

@JimPlaxco Where can I download the other bands? I’d like to play with them.

Hi Tobias,
In order to download the full set of data for this image you need to create an account at Earthexplorer.usgs.gov. Each observation is a zipped tarball and will be on the order of 0.8 to 1.0 GB.
The easiest way to find the image is to use the path and row selection criteria. For this image the path is 171 and the row is 026. Then click the SHOW button and it will automatically fill in the lat/long parameter - as shown in this image:

The data set that you need to use is Landsat 8 OLI/TIRS C1 Level 2. Note that the GUI takes a little getting used to. You should also install the USGS Bulk Download Application for managing the download of your orders.

My try (Gimp only too)

Needs moar JPEG!

Compared to Vulcan stone sunset, this one was a cinch!

Lake Elton (John :stuck_out_tongue:) reminds me of a profile of a  bear. My take is not in colour; it is easier that way. Perhaps I will attempt  an alt in colour later…

1. gmic → b&w (norm) → double size → sharpen (high freq contrast) → adjust brightness, contrast (curves) → halve size
2. pnmclahe → enhance contrast

Zoom 100% and enjoy!

My take with rawtherapee.
About the same steps as @afre but with rawtherapee

Here is my alt. I used roughly the same process as my previous take; except in colour and then I merged the two, mostly to add detail back onto the lake area.

Zoom 100% and enjoy!

Here is alt2a and alt2b. This time without the use of special sharpening and pnmclahe; therefore quick and simple to process. For some reason, discuss gave them the same name. I am sure you could spot the difference.

Zoom 100% and enjoy!

Psychedelic!

Its subtle sibling…

Hi All. Downloaded the RawTherapee 5.5RC1 from @gaaned92 (THANK YOU!) and used it on this image. Works like a charm! Used the Haze Removal tool. So this pp3 file wont work with old versions.
