Possible DT 5.0.0 Bugs

I downloaded source code for DT from the darktable.org site and installed on Linux Mint 22 desktop with Intel CPU/NVidia GPU. Installation did not give any indication of errors. There are two possible bugs.

  1. The zoomable lightable allows me to zoom in and out but does not allow navigation by selecting with the left mouse button. The lighttable does not move.
  2. The filmstrip in darkroom does not allow me to select a different photo by left clicking on it. Instead it gives an indication that 2 images are selected in the top bar of darkroom. The screen capture below shows this behavior. I can change to a new photo by double clicking a new photo but the top bar continues to show “2 images selected”.

I uninstalled/reinstalled DT but experienced the same behavior. I then downloaded the AppImage from darktable.org and am having the same issue.

To see if it was a problem with my desktop computer I downloaded and installed the AppImage on a laptop and am seeing the same two issues.

Any suggestions appreciated.

Afaik, that behaviour is as intended. The “two images selected” comes (I think) from the image being edited, it’s always part of the selection.

If that behavior is intended then great - I just don’t recall it from earlier versions. It just seems strange that two images are selected/highlighted in the filmstrip at the bottom - I’m certain that is new behavior. Another screen grab below shows what I am referring to.

The inability to select a different photo by left clicking on it is more of a problem and definitely different behavior from 4.8.1.

I also find this problematic but have worked out that double clicking works around the issue. I have been trawling through the settings, unsuccessfully trying to find a way of restoring the single click option.

Curious if you have the problem with the zoomable lighttable and not being able to left click and navigate? Thanks.

It was an intended change and there is no way to change it back. After a week of this change, muscle memory gets used to it and you won’t think about it.

Agreed - I had already reached that conclusion :grinning:

I am afraid that I have only ever used lighttable in filemanager mode, so I do not comprehend what you are trying to achieve (see below for my alternative answer).

OK, I think I now understand the issue. In zoomable lighttable some thumbnails are located beyond the margins and are therefore inaccessible. I would expect to be able to access such thumbnails by dragging the table with my left mouse button, but I cannot.

I am using a Windows version of darktable BTW.

I agree (you need a bit more finger muscle :point_up_2:) and you can also use Space/Backspace to navigate forward/backwards in Darkroom as well. The behavior is consistent in Darkroom.

I have more problems in Lightable with the culling layout fixed mode. Sometimes I can click anywhere in the filmstrip and the central view changes to the selected image. But most of the time not, i.e. a single or double click in the filmstrip doesn’t move the central view, only the mouse wheel or the left/right arrows move the central view image by image. I have to go back to zoomable or file manager view to jump to a more distant image. I haven’t figured out what triggers the change in this behavior.
Curious if others observe this as well.

In zoomable view (W11) I cannot move thumbs with the left mouse button neither. Maybe it was possible in 4.8.1 but I very rarely use this mode. I think this view can be used if you want to overlook a large series of images and then zoom in to a specific one. You have to select the image.

This sounds like a bug. With the holidays, I won’t have access to dt for a week, so I cant test this. The OP should report this in GitHub as an issue.

I can learn to live with the new filmstrip useage in darkroom now that I know it’s not a problem with my system.

As far as the zoomable lighttable issue - I will report this on GitHub later today.

Thanks for everyone’s help.

Since upgrading from 4.8 to 5.0, my lighttable view displays the thumbnails always starting from the oldest. I have to scroll a long way to get to the latest ones. 4.8 always started at the latest one, or maybe where I had left off working the time before.

How do I get back to the old behavior?

To be clear, I still want them sorted from oldest to newest, I just want to go into lighttable positioned at the newest ones.

PS - I found in the manual that I can press the End key and go where I want to be, instantly. But I’d still prefer if lighttable just opened there, like it did in 4.8.

In the top bar there is a button to toggle the sorting.

Thanks. Maybe I misunderstand, but I don’t want to change the sorting, I just want to be taken to the end instead of the beginning when I start the lighttable. All the older versions used to do that.

For me I think or thought it had always been the last image i had edited or left selected was where the selected image was set when I next opened DT… I guess I will have to look… I’m pretty sure it didn’t at least for me always go to the newest when sorted form oldest to newest…
