Question about masking in Darktable

image
So I have created a parametric mask based upon brightness and DT has done reasonably well with this. However, there are some parts outside of the arch that I would like to erase from the mask and some parts through the arch that I would like to add to the mask. Now in Adobe’s LR I could use the brush tool to add to the selection or as an eraser to remove from the selection. I could combine both of these actions in LR to get the desired result using the brush separately in each mode. Looking at a similar approach in DT I can either use the drawn mask brush and combine it with the parametric mask or subtract it from the parametric mask. I don’t see a way of using one instance of the brush to add to the selection and then another to subtract from the selection.

I hope want I am trying to do makes sense and I am wondering if there is a way of doing this, but it is just not being obvious to me. Also, apologies for using the L word here. I really much prefer masking in DT, but I hope I can sort this small issue out.

Probably easiest to duplicate the module, reset tvr mask, and add what you need. That’s pretty blunt, but it works.

Since I have no idea: would it be much of effort to implement the option to set the exclude / contribute optionally for each part of a mask? So just to get a feeling if it would make sense to raise an enhancement request… Bye, Lars.

I think the mask manager, with its operations and the inverted mask flag should allow you to combine shapes in very versatile ways; then you can combine the resulting drawn mask with the parametric one.

@kofa @arturoisilvia thanks so much for pointing to mask manager and related ressources. It’s such a powerful component I was not yet aware of  makes fun to play with. So I’m quite happy having learned something new in dt again. Awesome software…
