Quick question about clipping indication in Filmic V4

Am I right that the flat orange sections in the filmic curve (as shown in the image below) indicate that shadows and highlights are clipping?

The reason I’m unsure is that it doesn’t always seem to match the over/under exposure toggle. As you can see from below, the filmic curve shows no clipping, but the over/under exposure toggle shows a lot of clipping in highlights and shadows, even when the thresholds are set to 0% and 100%

Clipping in filmic happens because of bad choices of white and black relative exposure.

The clipping of the curve, as shown in the graph, only means that your look tone curve is non-monotonous, which can induce local contrast inversion in some parts and possibly clipping too, but it’s not the major reason.

non-monotonous => not strictly monotonic :slight_smile:

Ok, so the filmic clipping indicators do not correspond exactly to the over/under exposure toggle indicators. So, my takeaway from this is that:

  • We should always use the over/under exp. toggle to be sure of shadows/highlights clipping
  • We should always avoid any clipping in the filmic curve (flat orange lines) because it shows some inversion somewhere

Would this be right?

Btw, I love what you’ve been doing with filmic and your contributions to darktable in general. It’s really enjoyable to use and I’m getting great results from it. I’ve also learned so much from your videos. I’ll be setting up a donation…
