RAF files show black or incomplete preview after mobile editing in RawTherapee 5.12

Mobile Device: Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra (used for editing RAW files with mobile apps)

Problem Description:
When opening RAF files from my Fujifilm X-T50 that have been previously edited on my Samsung S25 Ultra (using mobile photo editing apps), RawTherapee 5.12 displays a black or incomplete preview. Some unedited RAF files show correctly, but RAFs edited on my mobile device are rendered as completely black or with missing image data.

Steps to Reproduce:

  1. Capture RAW photos with Fujifilm X-T50 and save as RAF files.
  2. Edit these RAF files on Samsung S25 Ultra with photo editing apps.
  3. Transfer edited RAF files back to Windows 11 PC.
  4. Open edited RAFs in RawTherapee 5.12.
  5. Observe black or incomplete preview while unedited RAFs display correctly.

Expected Result:
All RAF files should be viewable and editable in RawTherapee regardless of prior mobile editing.

Actual Result:
Edited RAFs from the Samsung S25 Ultra show a black or blank preview in RawTherapee, making them unusable.

Additional Info:

  • Issue appears tied to mobile apps altering metadata or embedded previews, breaking compatibility.
  • Other RAW editors like Darktable handle the files differently with varying success.
  • Using Windows 11, fully updated.
  • Attached sample RAF and RawTherapee PP3 files for testing.

What app are you using to edit on the phone? Is it saving all edits to the RAF file?

I only used the edit button in my gallery to crop and chage some color settings. In windows 11 it all looks fine. only if i import it into Rawtherapee its black. Additional Observation:
It appears that the RAW images which display correctly in RawTherapee always have lens metadata present behind the camera model name. Conversely, RAF files that show up as completely black in RawTherapee lack this lens information in the metadata.

I’d stop editing using the gallery app if it is altering the raw file from your camera.

haha…i can see the fotos perfectly on my windows pc. The bug is in Raw Therapee, when i convert them into jpeg thats why i postet it here lol.

I do care, that’s why I said you should stop using the piece of software (gallery app) that renders your raw files uneditable.

You can’t crop a raw file and then try to save it and still have the raw file unless your mobile app is non destructive and then there would be no issue. You will have some modified file that it has created in response to your changes and clearly its not in a format that RT is expecting… Or ist seem so…you could share one of these files for examination…

if windows can show it right everyone can…xn view can convert it too

That doesn’t mean its a viable raw file both windows and xnview can manage multiple formats…

Can you just share one so we can see what the issue is or transfer your issue as it is nicely formatted in the post to github so someone that can do something about it can get eyes on it??

In your post you mention attached files but I didn’t notice them…

Maybe you did already and if so ignore that …

They’re both likely showing you the embedded jpeg. You can share a file for people to inspect, otherwise there isn’t much point of posting further.
