This is very timely for me as my Kindle Paperwhite 5th generation, aged 12 years, is on its last legs. The battery now holds so little charge that if I charge it fully, it is good for about 2 hours of reading, and when it is depleted it does not simply turn off but slows then and occasionally reboots itself.
I don’t normally develop emotional attachment to gear, but since I read a lot and this device lasted so long, sharing so many happy memories, I am making an exception here. This e-reader travelled with me from the glaciers of Iceland to the desert dunes of Oman and a lot of great places in between, always providing comfort, from light science fiction to economic history and psychology. Rest in peace, little buddy. ![]()
I would have ordered another Kindle blindly, except that Amazon kept popping up the “trade in” option and after clicking through a lot of buttons I was always informed that either my location is not eligible (then why did they offer?) or they cannot ship the new device to that location. So, while looking into this issue, I was informed that the new Kindles do not allow file transfer via USB which I find unacceptable. I settled on a Pocketbook Verse Pro as a replacement instead.
