I posted this in another thread already from photojournalist Steve Simon.
Certainly it is, but there are so many ways to do spray & pray. The term itself does not describe the variation (if any) the photographer introduces.
Thatās a beautiful blog, thank you for sharing!
Iām not sure if I ever heard this advice at any point, but I intuitively embraced it from a young age through experience. Getting that roll of film back and finding that none of the shots worked out is a very harsh and effective lesson in getting at least one shot.
One of the first things I do now whenever I see something likely to change fast is just rattle off a shot immediately, even if itās at a stupidly wide angle. Then, if the action is still happening, I try to compose better. The funny thing is that it even applies to sunsets and rainbows, which arenāt that fast, but still, I just get one shot off quickly in case the colours change quickly.
It would be an interesting photo book if I could identify all those āfirst shotsā.
Getting the shot first is something which I have also tried to engrain via experience. But also (especially with the slower AF of my previous cameras) I often learned the hard way that getting technique right is almost equally important. Having the AF hit, having the camera setup so that upon turning it on it isnāt set to F16 from a previous shot etcā¦
Getting a Sony A7iii a couple of years back removed a lot of those headaches though. High ISO is viable and the fast eye-AF/AF-C is magic to me.
Hey Tim, wishing you a speedy recovery!
Pro tip: consume copious amounts of ice creamāitās practically medicine at this point.
Last year, I had my own dental drama. Went in for a simple root canalāeasy enough, right? Except my dentist turned out to be a hardcore football (soccer) fanatic. There I was, mouth wide open, drill buzzing dangerously close to my face⦠and his eyes glued to the match playing on the TV above my head.
I wasnāt sure if I was getting a root canal or just an unfortunate spectator at the World Cup of Dentistry.
Things got really tenseāon the field and in the chair. But just when I thought I might not make it, the referee blew the halftime whistle, and finally, the dentist remembered I existed. Sweet relief!
Anyway, I lived to tell the tale. Heās actually a great doctorājust not during match time.
Take care and heal well, my friend! Youāve got this (and hopefully, your doctor isnāt a cricket / soccer fan mid-surgery).
Thanks, but that was months ago. My dental surgeon was fast and efficient. When he was finished, I asked him, wasnāt he going to extract the other tooth? He had done both of them in about 20 minutes.
That had to be a huge reliefā¦
We are off to the mountains for family vaction in two days (wife, me, 5 y.o.). We are traveling by train so I try to pack light. Iām trying to decide which lenses to pack for my Sony A7iii between four primes: 25 mm, 35 mm, 55 mm and 85 mm⦠I loove the 55 mm for outdoor family shots. maybe 55 and 24 mm? But then again Iād like to experiment with some tele-landscape-photography so the 85 mm feels enticing as well. Help! ![]()
Uhhhh guys I think we got a spammer invasion going on, this is like the third person and at least the fifth post
@Vente keep on flagging! Thanks!
Does flagging as a Regular instantly hide the post? Or is it for everyone?
25 and 85? Seems like a good compromise as you can still get some good portraits and family photos with the 85.
I believe it does.
It seems like weāre good now⦠In total there were like eight posts ![]()
@darix banned some IPs and blocked some domains. All of this on sys admin day. OH SWEET IRONY.
@darix
Nevermind LMAO
@Vente I noticed a bunch last week.
For a hgg h fgyh th poster to have such a normal handle kevin01ā¦
