Random thoughts and finds...

I used to shoot RAW+JPEG, but quite a while ago I decided that it’s a waste of space and that the embedded JPEG in the RAW file is enough for me. Even by extracting the embed the quality is good enough for when I need a JPEG fast.

I use the Neutral profile on Nikon with pretty much no modifications - it works very well for me and I usually achieve something similar/better than that

I shoot raw+jpg and have the camera configured for nice JPGs. The reason is that I don’t like editing large amounts of photos, e.g. from vacation or family gatherings, so there I often simply use the sooc jpg, If it’s good enough.

I enjoy raw processing much more on the more artsy shots where the quantity is much lower.

As a consequence of this, I frequently wonder why on earth raw histograms are not a standard feature of cameras. It should be so trivial to add for manufacturers.
Maybe also due to this I typically don’t bother with ETTR and just aim for properly exposed JPGs.

I shoot in “Provia”, Fuji’s standard profile. I’ve set up darktable to mimic this style, simply because I prefer the look to darktable’s default. It twists some hues in a pleasant way. In camera, I don’t customize styles at all.

I turn down distractions as much as I can. No histogram, no zebras or blinkies, no level, reduced icons. I don’t need tools to see over-exposure: I can tell from the way everything goes white. It took some years to build this trust, but it works well. Perhaps because Fuji has a relatively large exposure latitude?

I have learned to trust the camera to choose appropriate and safe enough exposure settings, and only change them if I want a particular effect. I focus my attention on catching the right moment and subject instead. Most commonly, I in fact don’t use the camera at all until the time is right, and then only raise it momentarily to take the shot. Even when shooting a lot, my camera is mostly switched off, hanging on the strap.

My camera is set up to easily record good data, but the image is formed in post. I shoot a bit wide, and a bit dark, to give me some additional leeway. I usually don’t check my shots at all. I prefer to stay aware and observant in the scene than spend time configuring my camera just right. I accept noise where it happens.

In other news, the last few sessions with Ubuntu have been good. A few extensions have improved my GNOME experience a bit. It makes me happy that apps actually stop when you close them (:green_apple:). It’s a nice, no-fuss system.

I feel like raw shooting is a complete afterthought for the UI design of most camera manufacturers.

That’s why I ended up writing my own photo editor, to make it quick and easy to achieve a good quality result that uses the full data provided by raw files, at the expense of flexibility that isn’t needed most of the time.

What is the trick to get the dt default looking like Provia?

Personally I shoot RAW+JPEG. After converting them to JXL, they occupy a measly 3MB each and since I like to use the film simulations in camera to get different looks, they might be usable to share straight away.

When I am with friends and family, if the photo is well exposed, I don’t see how I can improve it and make it better than the camera JPEG unless I put in some serious work, the simulations are that good. Until capture sharpening came along, the Fuji JPEG was also almost always sharper than the edited RAW in darktable, even with all the fancy modules, the built in demosaic and sharpening Fuji has in their engine is really good.

For my wildlife photography and other stuff, I put in the work editing the RAWs because I want it to be a more artistic process, and often the photos really need editing due to being shot under difficult light, needing cropping, etc.

This conversation got me wondering if I can somehow inject the full res JXL into the RAW files, substituting the thumbnail JPEG they come with.

I shoot raw exclusively, but still made up a profile because my camera applies it for the LCD and the EVF, and my “profile” has the sole purpose of increasing visibility of all image parts for composition: lift shadows heavily (so that I can see them even if ETTR), desaturate (for better nuance, still retain color). It works fabulously. And of course goes into the preview JPEG in the raw which looks a bit weird, but OK to work with.

With recent Darktable improvements, I see absolutely no point in shooting JPEG. I sometimes try but always end up disappointed.

I used darktable-chart and a color checker to make lookup table profiles. You can find the styles here.

Good job I have already read the book of Project Hail Mary because if I hadn’t, I would already know the plot just from the headlines of every article about the movie appearing on my feed. It’s almost as if all these articles want to give you as many spoilers as possible. I know the first trailer had a big reveal, but every headline since has been hellbent on clearing up every remaining mystery!

My Linux experiment with the Framework Desktop is wrapping up. I’m returning the computer.

It works well, it’s small, fast, and quiet. GNOME works well, it’s clean and good looking. Of course it can’t run some proprietary software, but I knew that before going in. It can run games well, but I game on my handheld, not the computer.

I think what happened was that I felt I was losing control in my life in general, and projected that frustration on my computer. A new role at work left me feeling uprooted. AI coding is threatening to take away a thing I love. So when I got to do my photo editing in the evening, it was with a lot of pent up resentment and insecurity.

Then the latest updates to MacOS were yet another step in the wrong direction, and that was the straw that broke the camel’s back. So I decided to do something about that and got the new computer. But ultimately, it was not the computer that caused my annoyance, it was everything else. So the new computer didn’t solve anything.

But it wasn’t a total waste of resources; I learned something from the experience, both about myself and my computing.

Since you are a member of this forum, you should know better: the answer is to project your frustration on your camera, and get a new one.

(But, seriously, you have my respect for realizing what is going on within the return window. I understand some of my bad choices much later.)

I tip my hat to you for healthy introspection. Clarity is a blessing.

So speaking of introspection…

Someone threw this over my transom: Marc Andreeson is a philophical zombie

It was amusing, if a little superficial (which is fine given the subject). I dont know what I find more entertaining though: The parts about Andreeson or that google brought in that particular person for a lecture.

Worth a cozy watch over your favourite evening beverage.

I missed this until today: Android Developer Blog

So android apps can only be installed on 20 devices before you have to pay Google (I assume this is still in effect) and provide a government ID and/or other information. Students and companies developing/testing apps are ok, (see possible restrictions below) but good luck to anyone who just wanted to distribute by providing the apk.

That is, unless you live in Brazil, Singapore, & Thailand. You will not be able to download or use an existing unverified app after September. Everyone else is scheduled for the same treatment in 2027+

It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

EDIT: it appears you will still be able to use unverified apps in these locations.
