RAW Therapee Browser cannot “see” Affinity Photo files - is there a way for me to see the Affinity Photo files as the browser just ignores them? Thanks
The list of image file name extensions RawTherapee “sees” is in Preferences on the File Browser tab. While you could certainly add “afphoto” to the list of parsed extensions, that doesn’t mean RawTherapee will know how to read it, extract the thumbnail, etc. Plus, RawTherapee doesn’t know how to open an Affinity Photo document, so there’s little need to show it in the file browser.
What I personally do (and others almost certainly have differing strategies) is to use an image viewer such as FastStone (Windows only) or XnView MP (Windows, Mac, Linux) and browse images with it instead. Most image viewers will let you specify one or more “open with” applications and you can point them at the RawTherapee executable (binary) file. That way if you prefer to open a file with RT directly from your browsing session, you can do it. I use XnView MP for browsing and preliminary culling, then I open RT (well, ART, actually but same process) and use the built-in file browser simply like an “Open” dialog. But for pre-edit browsing, quick viewing, etc., I use a dedicated image viewer.
Once again, others will be different and you may prefer some other approach. But AFAIK even if you add the Affinity Photo document extension to RT, it still won’t preview them (I tried and it didn’t work).
Many thanks Len - I prefer RT’s RAW development to Affinity Photo but like AP’s layer etc… ability in their Photo Persona… will try thr work arounds…
Same here, except I use ART which is a RawTherapee fork. Not trying to draw you away from RT but if you’re interested you can find out more here: agriggio / ART / wiki / Home — Bitbucket
I use AP for post-conversion work, not for raw conversion itself.
Is there any viewer for that format. That is the native format with all the layering and other information. It looks like in v2 you can embed a copy of your raw file but the files from what I have seen are massive when you do this…there is an option to a linked version so this might work like sidecars… I haven’t upgraded so I havent really played with it just seen it demonstrated…
XnView MP will show the afphoto’s preview image, but that’s all (and they’re small*). I’m not aware of any other viewers for Photo 2.
IMO its raw capabilities are basic but functional, but not nearly approaching anything RT, ART, dt, etc. can do. Of course, it’s all-in-one and it’s easy, so that’s a legitimate selling point, It has some kind a basic layer capability for raw editing, but I’ve not delved into it enough to say what it is for sure (no incentive). You can go back and forth between raw and bitmap, somewhat like – from what I understand – you can with Smart Objects between LR and PS. But I have no LR nor (remotely recent) PS experience.
* At one point, double-clicking (or pressing Enter) on an afphoto file in XnView MP would open the preview in full screen view. It was significantly smaller than my 1920 pixel wide laptop screen. However, at some point it started simply launching the file in Affinity Photo. No idea how or when but the filetype association took over. Oh well…
I use Photo Supreme 7 as my file manager - decided to bite the bullet and get a DAM as Serif don’t ever seem like they are going to do one. PS7 can “see” APV2 photos and produce a nice thumbnail but not APV1, even if you edit APV1 photo in V2 and save. Go figure. So i am really in a hunt for a top notch RAW editor as most of my photos can be done there. I’ll have to try the back and forward to Develop Module that we can now do and see if that suffices, but AP RAW editor is not much IMO…
PIXLS.US is the place to be - RawTherapee, darktable and ART all have their forums here, as well as several others: PIXLS.US - Software
