RawTherapee 5.12 Released

It’s a FAQ and happens on every release.
It’s all based on the site and app’s Microsoft Defender SmartScreen reputation score. A developer can do several things to increase this score, some of which involve annual expense, legal documentation, DUNS registration, etc. The M$ Defender SmartScreen also covers the linux subsystems. Github.com is a Microsoft network, so the reputation is going to be basically much higher than rawtherapee.com, a private HU entity hosted via a CZ provider.

Its not working for me on my Mac (running Sonoma 14.5). RawTherapee opens, but its just a blank grey window with a few headings and tabs. But nothing cab be clicked or opened. See attached screen shot.

Hi @Abid, are you on intel or Apple Silicon? The Apple code was compiled for system 15.4 Sequoia. The intel code should work from 12.3+.
See if there is a splash screen hidden behind the main window…

Hi Hiram - Bingo! There was indeed a splash screen hidden behind the window. It seems to be working OK now. I am using a Mac mini M1 - which is Apple Silicon.

The new Gamut Compression tool looks like a really useful addition to RawTherapee, although it is not documented in RawPedia. Unfortunately I can’t use the new version because of unresolved issue with HiDPI monitors - the interface is practically unusable. This is the second version with this problem - the previous one (5.11) was also unusable.

This PR resolves blurry GUI HiDPI issues I've been running into when using RawTh…erapee on Wayland at 125% scaling. With HiDPI, cairo drawing is done in logical pixels. A logical pixel represents some integer number of device pixels. To handle HiDPI, back buffers and preview data needs to be sized for device pixels. Then `cairo_set_device_scale(.., device_scale, device_scale)` should be used on the cairo surface to indicate that it does not need to be upscaled. For example, if `device_scale=2`, a preview that needs to cover a (10x20) logical pixel area should be sized (20, 40) and then `hidpi::setDeviceScale(surface, 2)` is called. I refactored several `int` variables into more descriptive structs (e.g. `hidpi::LogicalCoord` and `hidpi::DeviceCoord`). This was partly to help me reason about the code and partly as documentation. Unfortunately, this refactor makes the PR a bit noisy. This PR fixes #5591, fixes #6712, fixes #7189. It should help issue #5291 along. # Features Fixed * Blurry text/icons * Blurry file browser/batch queue thumbnails * Blurry navigator preview * Blurry editor panel image # Limitations The inspector is still blurry. I couldn't untangle the math. The code implies it is already HiDPI aware, but doesn't seem to work in my testing. If your compositor scales to a fractional value (e.g. 125%) by rendering at 200% and downscaling, the 1:1 zoom option will not be a 1:1 pixel match. The image will be smaller than expected. This effect is worse when the fractional value needs to be rounded up more. We could potentially fix it with the following, but I have not made the change here. The change makes fractional scaling behavior more like what I observed in Windows. ```cpp #ifdef GDK_WINDOWING_WAYLAND gdk_set_allowed_backends("x11,*"); #endif ``` # Testing * Arch Linux - KDE Plasma 6 - Wayland (for some reason DPI doesn't change?) * 100% => DPI=96 device_scale=1 * 125% => DPI=96 device_scale=2 * Effectively downscaled from 200% which means 1:1 zoom is too small, but at least the image is not blurry * 200% => DPI=96 device_scale=2 * Windows 10 * 100% => DPI=96 device_scale=1 * 125% => DPI=120 device_scale=1 * 200% => DPI=96 device_scale=2

I wonder if you are able to test that?

I’m not developer - I will wait for the fix in the next version (5.13). It is just frustrating to see two consecutive versions, whose interface is practically unusable on HiDPI monitors.

I thought you raised the issue on github; wondering why you haven’t returned to file these comments or otherwise lite fire under devs’ … Most of us are not blessed with hidpi hardware, so the testing has and will be intermittent without urgency.

I’ve installed but it doesn’t run. Message pops up: Procedure entry point not found GetSystemTimePreciseAsFileTime in library KRENEL32.dll

Hi, RT 5.12 doesn't start on Windows 7, and I receive an error message "The pro…cedure entry point "GetSystemTimePreciseAsFileTime" could not be located in the dynamic link library KERNEL32.dll". RT 5.10 worked fine on the same system. I didn't see any notices indicating that support for Windows 7 has been discontinued. If support has indeed been dropped, it would be helpful to mention this somewhere, so users are aware.

Windows 7 has been EOL for like a decade. Its time to move on.
