I don’t know what’s wrong with the FileChooserButton on Windows. It’s still slow (about 100 ms per instance at my system), though it’s faster than with earlier gtk3 versions. We already have an Issue about that. I closed it a while ago because on my Windows 7 it’s acceptable now.

Ok, here we go… RT took again about 50 seconds to launch. I pressed CtrlC after about 35s. And after I typed “thread apply all bt full” the output started scrolling and then gdb crashed again.

Some additional info regarding this test day with RT:

Today, RT started several times within 7-8 seconds.
No reboot of my machine during the day
After several resume-from-sleep events, RT launch suddenly took 50 (!) seconds to start.
Run the gdb rawtherapee-debug.exe version again.
Pressed CtrlC after approx 35 seconds
gdb command window is now very sloooooow when you type something. (?)
Typed “thread apply all bt full”
output started scrolling in the gdb window, until gdb crashes!

Then I restarted my system again and RT is again back to its previous behavior of starting up in about 7 seconds (for as long as it lasts…)

So, just to confirm:

with a ‘fresh’ windows start, RT starts normally
after a series of suspend/resume events (to RAM or to disk?), RT shows the slow starting behaviour
upon reboot, it behaves as expected again

is this correct? if so, at least we have a clue on what to do to try to reproduce the problem…

Fresh restart of Windows; startup time of RT is about 7-8 seconds. Clicking on e.g. ‘preferences’ also 1-2 seconds delay before the ‘preferences’ window appears. Which is imho still too long for a application to start and an additional option to appear
The very slow RT launch time happens indeed after a number of resuming from sleep (S3 suspend). Can’t figure out how many though.
After reboot all is back to ‘normal’ slow (7-8s)

Ok, this is useful info, at least now we can try reproducing.

This has been confirmed to be the normal behaviour under windows. I understand that you might not be happy about it, but that’s a separate issue, so let’s drop this for now and focus on the main problem.

unfortunately, virtualbox doesn’t support suspend/resume of VMs, so I can’t test. maybe somebody with a Windows installation on real hardware can give this a try?

Some additional info:
(yes, the issue of slow and very slow startup still remains)

As mentioned before, RT takes about 7 seconds to launch on my freshly restarted PC.
And, somewhere during the day, RT takes about 50 seconds to start (after a number of returning from sleep mode)

RT startup time is about 7 seconds on a empty directory
RT startup time is about 7 seconds on a directory containing just a few (5-10) image files
RT startup time is about 7 seconds (!) on a directory containing 60 huge RAW files (Nikon D800E NEFs)
RT startup time is about 7 seconds on a directory containing 325 (!) huge RAW files (Nikon D800E NEFs)
So general performance is no issue at all, at my workstation.

What is remarkable that RT creates an instance in the Resource Monitor for every (!) file it opens and for which it is generating a thumbnail/cached image. I’ve never seen a image processing program do this, while opening a directory with images…
So when RT scans a directory with several hundred of image files, there are also hundreds of individual file handle instances running of rawtherapee.exe (with the same PID), each with its own image file handle for each image file in that directory.
But after the initial thumbnail creation of a image directory of hundreds of graphic files, the aehistograms, data and images subdirs in \Appdata\Local\RawTherapee\cache are filled up with hundreds of cached files.
But even then, when I stop RT and start it again, it takes again 7 seconds to launch. And it doesn’t matter if RT starts up in a empty directory or a directory filled with >300 image files.
Also deleting all the cache directories doesn’t matter; only the initial thumbnail generation takes some time (of course).

hi,

this is the most useful piece of info to nail down the source of the problem. unfortunately, it is also the most vague. if you are willing to spend some time to get a more precise description of what sequence of events are needed to make RT start slowly, that would be of help. examples:

does it only happen after a number of suspend/resume events?
if so, how many?
are these suspend to ram or to disk? (or it doesn’t matter?)
are you using network drives and/or external drives?

Sleep (S3), suspend to disk. I don’t use suspend to RAM.
10 minutes display sleep
1 hour computer to sleep mode. (which only occurs when I forgot to select go-to-sleep mode myself )

No, not constantly. Only occasionally when I’m doing a backup to my NAS (Synology). But that is a manually triggered event and doesn’t run daily. I can’t find any similarities with this backup action.

S4 = Hibernate = Suspend to disk.

So, which one leads to a slow RT start time, is it “Sleep/Suspend to RAM” or “Hibernate/Suspend to disk”?

To better test this, in Windows 10, go to Start > Settings > System > Power & sleep > Additional power settings > Choose what the power button does > Change settings that are currently unavailable, and enable both Sleep and Hibernate.

Now when you click on the Power button, you can test the Sleep and the Hibernate modes. Test each by invoking each manually.

Sorry for the confusion.
But I mean S3 is the maximum power saving setting in the BIOS of my computer.
I have 2 options in the BIOS; ACPI Suspend Type, S1 or S3 (STR).

(I have hibernate switched off already for many years by means of powercfg.exe /hibernate off command)

In Win10, I choose sleep mode; not specific suspend to disk/ram.
Power settings → Pressing power button → shuts down my computer (so that means a fresh start, after switching on)
Power settings → Pressing sleep button → Nothing happens, because I have no sleep button on my computer.
When select Sleep mode I do that deliberate, by pressing [Windows key] + selecting [Sleep]

But think again; not always does going into sleep mode/resuming, leads to RT being slow!
Sometimes it doesn’t, sometimes it does! And YES, RT is the only piece of software I’m trying to use which behaves in this strange way!

But I switched off sleep/suspend/whatever mode this morning as to see what will happen with RT.
And guess what? After using my computer for several hours, WITHOUT going to sleep/suspend mode, suddenly, about the 4th time I tried to start RT, it didn’t start within 7 seconds, but it took the long run; 50 seconds!
So, it seems to me, it has little to do with sleep/suspend mode altogether.
At the same time I’ve noticed in the Resource Monitor that RT hardly uses any CPU/Disk I/O, only after about 49 seconds, so in the last second of waiting, there is some % of CPU + Disk I/O and the RT Window opens.
When clicking on ‘Preferences’ in RT, (so after the long startup time of 50s), it also takes about 30 seconds for the ‘Preferences’ window to appear! During that time, rawtherapee.exe status in Resource Monitor changes to ‘Not Responding’ for those 29 seconds! Without any noticeable CPU/Disk I/O!
BTW: In the situation where RT starts within 7 seconds, the ‘Preferences’ window only takes about 2 seconds to appear…
And no, no messages whatsoever in the Event Viewer

Previously I posted a huge log file from several debug startup attempts of RT (7s + 50s start time). Nothing to be derived from that?

Here I am trying to run it on Debian testing. It runs but …it feels weird, as if every time I move a slider, it hesitates somewhat. Is this a GTK3 thing ? What info can I provide y’all with?
