I believe HEIF files are new to DT 5.7. I have a very large panorama stitch to export and thought I might compare HEIF to JPG and Tiff exports for size and quality. However, when I selected HEIF it automatically defaulted to 50% quality, 8 bit and sRGB. I was wondering what values would be recommended.
Apparently, HEIF is another container format. So, I would research the implementation in darktable, then base my choices on what is good for whatever codec being stored. Possibilities include JFIF (JPEG), AV1, JPEG2000, HEVC, and others.

IIRC 50% was chosen as the best choice of quality vs speed vs size. You would probably have to search back to the PR to see the discussion about the tradeoffs and why it was chosen.
