Hello there
This is just to raise a question regarding GIMP, since I made a proposal in the company where I’m working for to use it as an alternative to Photoshop (aiming to replace it in the future, the application and privative image formats), I’m a bit more familiar with 2.10 but since the recent launch of version 3.0 I thought that focus on this latest version will worth it.
Since I’m not an expert in graphic design topics, I found a ton of resources and tutorials and I’m not sure which ones could be the best (to recommend to my coworkers and use them as reference) so there are some things I’d like to ask to real graphic designers and/or people with GIMP expertise.
The basic tasks we need to cover are the following (from the perspective of automated testing developers):
- Make professional removal of backgrounds from base images (to export them to PNG formats and save them in hexadecimal strings in a DB later)
- Open/Visualize Photoshop assets and edit them (if possible: modify and export to PNG mostly)
- Create Python plugins/scripts to add custom functionalities or do full/semi automated repetitive tasks.
So the questions are:
- First of all: Do you recommend use the version 2.10 or 3.0 for this and why?? (considering the heavy usage of Photoshop resources and the non-destructive approach of new version)
- Do you know any “direct to the chase” tutorials covering these tasks (it doesn’t matter if are specific parts of official tutos or docs) ??? This could include the specific sections with all we need to work with Gimp without lasting 2-3 hours in trainings (we already are loaded with many mandatory trainings), since it should be good have 3 or 4 for reference to share with my team that are preferably free of costs and/or with CC license.
- Do you have any resource or comment, supported by experience or real cases that could convince graphic designers to leave Photoshop ?? Since I’m advocating for GIMP from a developer perspective, but not as designer or illustrator considering that these design team works for automotive industry (serious stuff).
The tasks mentioned could be few, but are very important for our workflow, and I’m reaching out you guys because I’m taking this seriously and I’d like to ask actual experts and experienced users directly at least once.
Thanks.
