My version using darktable for wb and denoising, and a custom film simulation script with Fuji data.
I made the white balance warmer because I think that the original was way too cold.

With your permission, I add another version almost the same as the previous one. I just added a new instance of rgb colour balance to give it a bit more warmth.

Well, in my opinion the edit is not very useful then, if it doesn’t even apply to the rest of the squirrel. What software / modules did you use though?
Let’s not judge. What he’s done might be useful to someone; it is not up to us to decide in this manner.
However, Play Raws with no sidecar file shared do 100% miss the intent of the Play Raw category.
I agree. I usually use the “as shot to reference”, then Color Calibration, but sometimes I prefer “as shot”.
That’s very clever - love it
Not applicable. The edited frame contains the entire squirrel, so I don’t know what that means, sorry.

Converted with RT 5.1. In the GIMP: cropped, rotated 90°, flipped horizontally and edited.
I would like to reproduce the rich depth of colour in the squirrel seen in the JPG. Everything I try just makes the Squirrel too red.
So I tried to address your issue about reproducing the colors similar to the jpg out of the camera. Without seeing the JPG look I am flying blind, but the module I would use to tweak the depth of individual colors is the color zones module. The color equalizer module works in a similar way as well. I have raised the chroma for the color of the fur on the squirrel while leaving other colors alone. This module might resolve your issue.
Also if you use filmic you get more subdued colors than if you use sigmoid for the tone mapping. If you use filmic you would need to add colorfulness using the color balance rgb module. There are presets in that module to get you started. However, I personally use sigmoid as I prefer the colors it gives me straight out of the box.

I used the wrong words, I meant that the edit might not be useful, if the rest of the image (including other parts of the squirrel) are not usable.
Not my best work, that is for sure, but coming home from a 14 hour, it’s as good as I can muster for now. lol
That’s very different and arty - how did you do it?
Glad you liked the result, Angela. I used DAP Painter version 7 (8’s out now, but too cheap to upgrade) and custom nuts preset and exported just the transparent layer of nuts (since DAP 6, you were able to do so; previous versions of DAP did not have that feature and I requested this feature to Oscar until he finally did so; lol). Simple texture for the backdrop. Did some special blends with the original to push a bit of details out but just subtle blends. Look for Mediachance DAP to find Oscar’s site. Sadly, the public site setup for DAP to share and complain is no more; still, the program is fantastic. Sadly, AI has taken a lot of steam out of using DAP for me, but still I take out the cool program for a drive a few times a year. May mantra’s object oriented art (not the painterly presents most folk are aware of). Inspired by Arcimboldo many years ago and indeed, DAP is based on the Arcimbolder (not spelled wrong; that was the name) program around 20 years ago. The guy that created Arcimbolder sold it to Oscar and that’s a brief history of DAP.
