Red flower monster

IRL the flowers were all red, no white, and if anything, leaning a little more towards orange than magenta.
I’m not completely happy with my effort, so looking forward to see how others approach it!

haha, nice one. the good news: the red is still within rec2020 it seems.

this is a vkdt render, with sRGB output:

and this is the same but with gamut bounds checking limited to the sRGB gamut:

my conclusion: we will not be able to look at this via webbrowser/screenshots/sRGB, best you’ll get is via wide gamut monitor and appropriate colour management. i do this, if anything the red becomes deeper and less orange on my screen than the sRGB rendition above.

Well that’s a beast to tame for sure…

Oh difficult! The results may strongly depend on the hardware used to display the image. My humble try in darktable 3.4.

Wow, this is an interesting one to do. And, as already stated in different wording by Jo and Thomas: You really need good hardware to be able to fully appreciate this one.

Thanks for uploading a hard one

Really tricky! This reminds me of the red 300 SL Roadster in Daimler-Benz-Museum.

Exposure correction -3.00 helped me in your case:

Lovely nuances.

First of all, thank you for sharing. This one was a challenging one, nature surely isn’t in gamut
Did my best using filmic and several exposure modules.

Edit: I made this using DT 3.5

To show what structure is there, here a b&w edit for comparison.

Great to see all the different renditions!

Yes your screen shot shows it perfectly, difficult when the whole focal point is out of gamut. For online display one is faced with a choice: Preserve texture and gradients at the expense of colour, or preserve colour at the expense of texture and gradients. Maybe in another decade wide gamut monitors will be common place, and everyone will be able to appreciate both! The richness of colour and hue in your rendition is pretty much perfect.

Both rawtherapee users did an excellent taming. Very nice gradients. Looking forward to seeing the pp3’s, though don’t have dev version.

Very nice! Like the crop too.

Had to image search. Love that style!

Yes, perhaps I needed more exposure reduction in my version. Felt strange to do, given normal processing in dt is to increase, but increasing caused the reds to go white. There is always an exception to the standard…

Interested why you opted for several exposure modules instead of tone equaliser? [note: haven’t checked xmp yet, which may reveal the answer].

Yes there is a lot there. B&W brings it out nicely.

Again, thanks all for the renditions. Time to dive into the sidecars.

With Filmulator (this is its specialty):

  • Exposure Compensation -1 1/3
  • Drama 72
  • White Clipping Point 0.7

All the data is there; the raw histogram is perfectly exposed:

Some of it may be technically out of gamut but as long as it looks good with no harsh transitions…

Yes, this one was pretty tough. I had lots of trouble with the color calibration.

I did not use any modules that are exclusive to the development version.

Just loaded my edit in the latest stable and only if you actually use the colour picker will you notice that there is a very tiny difference in the way the colours are rendered. So you should be good to go.

I used several exposure modules just because i wanted broader changes in luminosity across the image, balancing the left and right side a bit, and still keep the main flower well lit.

red can shine brightly or darkly…

color calibration does a good job here
