Reduction of Glare in Photos

I’d like to edit some images I recorded with my Canon G12 to eliminate the glare from some places on the photo (they are photos of various art items (oil paintings, sculpture, etc.). Is there an editing feature in GIMP to eliminate or reduce these glares? (I use a Mac Pro with OS 10.14.6; the images are store in my Mac Photos library; I’ve tried using circular and linear polarization filters, but they don’t seem to help much.) Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hello @Dingbat,
welcome to the forum! Reflections should be prevented as much as possible during the shooting. To do this, use targeted lighting, e.g. with diffuse light. If this is not possible (outdoors), choose a time when the lighting conditions are favorable. Changing the shooting position can also help.
In image processing you can attenuate the brightness of reflections but this often looks unnatural. For small reflections, retouching tools can help by replacing the reflection with image information from the surrounding area (cloning).
Maybe you could post an example as plaw raw.

If you are photographing in a studio or are commissioned to take photo of art work in some place, the best way is of course to control light.
In other occasions when you are visiting, lighting can be awful, creating a lot of reflection and glare even in museums. My experience with a circular polarization filter indoor was not very conclusive.
You can change position, for example, on one side of a painting, which will need some perspective correction in post.
The worst case is when objects are in a window display case. The best mitigation of reflection is to put the glass on the display window and to try to mask remaining reflecting lights with cardboard.
For post, I refer to what @Thomas_Do wrote above.
for outdoor photo a polarization filter is a plus.
