Rendering Greens

First time Play Raw poster, be gentle.

I’ve always found it challenging to render green foliage in a picture in a pleasing way. I’ve often missed that aspect of old film prints from my youth, and missed it in more modern digital workflows.

I’ve been enjoying using the filmsim module in vkdt because I think it does a really good job of this!

Here’s a screenshot of my settings in case anyone is curious to play.

Curious what you all come up with!

So, I first “cheated” by using the agx-emulsion film simulator, but then I tried to redo it “by hand”. Here’s my result, using ART. (The parameters are embedded in the jpg in case someone wonders)

Here is my attempt in DT 5.1. I used the color zones module to set the final exposure for the greens and the tree trunk because I wanted to subdue the building in the background.

I could make it darker, if that’s what you want.

@jedsmith You really took no chances of blown highlights with this photo  (very pretty picture btw)

I usually desaturate the greens a little bit and decrease their brightness, otherwise I tend to find them quite harsh.

Here’s my attempt with darktable and agx tone mapper

I used to hate processing greens, but I’ve learned to embrace them. I realized that I like them darker and with more cyan than how they often come straight out of camera. Bright neon greens are not pleasant to me.

Thanks for sharing this nice pic!

Felt it needed to go a tinge towards yellow (so shifted that way). Also used luma invert overlay to open up the shadow details again as well as enhanced the contrast.

Rendering greens is often a question of personal preferences.

Adjusted from my first post: Toned down the greens and reduced the overall brightness.

Copied your jpeg and did it in gimp, then cropped.
