Since you are also an expert in 8bf, here is my request: would you find time to fix and update the gimp-pspi plugin for Gimp 3?
That would require someone who is an expert in the GIMP API.
Improving PSPI’s compatibility with 8bf filters would also require someone more familiar with the GIMP API than I am.
AFAIK the biggest compatibility issue is that PSPI doesn’t scale down the preview image when the filter requests it to do so. I looked into that years ago, but I was never able to figure out the GIMP API calls that would be required to fix that.

My attempts with the source code are also very distant.
In 2016 (after many attempts) I compiled this plugin, but despite the fact that 8bf filters were displayed in the Gimp menu, none of them could be executed. Determining whether this was a bug in the code or my bad compilation was beyond my knowledge.
As a small consolation, the 2008 version of pspi.exe (compiled and provided by Tor Lillqvist) works with some 8bf plugins in Gimp 2.10.38 (and after all the Gimp API has changed for 16 years).
