[resolved] import and index

Hello,
I’m new to linux and photoprism.
I have installed an openmediavault NAS and the photoprism plugin.
I would like to know, before starting, if the photos indexed in photoprism must be on the OMV NAS, or can they be in a Windows directory?
To put it more simply: can the photos stay there or do we have to import them?
Thanks in advance
Dany

ps: I don’t speak English, so this is a translation

Hi. When using PhotoPrism with OpenMediaVault (OMV), the photos need to be accessible from the OMV. Photos stored on a Windows computer would need to be moved to or shared with your OMV NAS first. You can share photos from a Windows folder, but I wouldn’t recommend it because your computer has to be on all the time and can be affected by internet problems. Copying/moving your photos directly to OMV NAS storage may be the best option

Welcome Dany…as a slight aside did you build your NAS… I need to do one and I was wondering if you had any tips or suggestions… I comment as I was thinking about first trying OMV as the NAS OS… Happy Holidays and good luck…

Hello and thank you for your reply ;=)

I’m going to install the photo folders on the nas omv.

I would like to ask you if once my photos are copied into a folder on the nas omv, will they be duplicated in the photoprism folder?

I’m asking this because when I opened photoprism for the 1st time, I uploaded my photos in the program window and when I went into the photoprism folder, there were 2 copies of my images in separate folders…

Thanks in advance!

Dany

Hi, I’ve tried 2 nas programs and omv is the one I use the best, you need to have some knowledge of linux I think, but the omv community is very active and you can find answers to all your questions ;=)

You can start here: https://www.openmediavault.org/

And forum help here: https://forum.openmediavault.org/

To start with, the ideal is 3 disks, a small one for the system and two larger ones for the data, it’s best if they have the same capacity.

Have a good evening!

Dany

Thanks…yes I have to build 2…one is for home and likely to be exactly as you specified…the other is for work… I bought some SAS drives that I cannot return and the 8 bay synology NAS wont work with them…I am looking at ground up solutions and prebuilt options which can be very costly…Thank you for your comments

PhotoPrism uses two main folders by default

Originals folder: This is where your source photos are located. When you link your NAS folder here, PhotoPrism will use these files directly without duplicating them.

Storage folder: This contains thumbnails and other processing data - not copies of your original photos.

Link your NAS photo folder as “originals” folder in PhotoPrism’s configuration to avoid duplication

thank you so much! enjoy your evening

You are welcome, feel free to ask any questions :slightly_smiling_face:
