Is there any way for me to install this latest version without having to compile it? It does not appear in the repos. 4.2 is the only version available.

Can’t say, as you haven’t even told us which version of Ubuntu you’re using. Start by selecting Ubuntu and following instructions: http://rawtherapee.com/downloads
Ubuntu 16.04 LTS. I added the ppa, and now have 5.1! Thanks!
On Ubuntu 17.04, using this PPA, the unstable/development version is working again, being regularly updated. Useful to help tracing new bugs.
