Samsung heic files are not being imported

I tried to import my Samsung heic files in DT (bot 3.8.1 and 4.0) on Ubuntu, but they are not being recognized. Is there anything I can do or install?

Thanks!

Thanks for the hint. I re-enabled it though after I discovered DT actually supports heic, so I’d like to stick with the image format and get DT enabled to recognise it.

How did you enabled it?

I mean I enabled it on my phone, in the settings. I’d like to get it enabled in DT as well.

Acording to this pull request you need Exiv2 0.27.x with ISOBMFF enabled. So you may have to check the eiv2 version for your Ubuntu install…
(for completeness: Exiv2 is a separate library not bundled with darktable)

One also needs to build dt w/ libheif (w/ its HEVC decoder dependencies) in addition to that. Don’t know how the Ubuntu package is built…

@Tsjoecha Please consider avoiding HEIF/HEIC completely as it is a patent-encumbered format and support for it in OSS will always be questionable.
