Scanner option in Digikam

Hi, I’m new to Digikam so excuse me if I’m missing something. I found documentation on how to scan photos to Digikam here Import From Scanner — Digikam Manual 8.2.0 documentation, but cannot find that option anywhere. I presume there must be a menu option in the same place where “Import from Camera” is, but I cannot see anything.

I’m on 8.1 and saw somewhere (Edit: in the documentation url, duh!) that there is an 8.2. But if I download from here digiKam - Download I only get 8.1?

Hello, you can get v8.2 from here:

These are weekly snapshots for testing purposes only. So if it blows up your scanner, you had been warned! :grinning:

Thanks for replying so quickly @paulmatth
Do I understand correctly that the scanner option is a new (officially unreleased) feature then?

No, not a new feature, it is also available in v8.1 (as I discovered today; never seen that before). But you must activate that option first, in Preferences, tab Miscellaneous, check Digital Scanner. Once done, you’ll find indeed under the Import menu the scanner option.

My Epson Perfection Photo scanner isn’t detected though, while Xsane finds it without problems, as usual. Pity, because the scanning options in Digikam looks fine.

I have also been using an Epson V600 for years which works perfectly with Vuescan and Xsane, but is not detected by Digikam. In fact I have another HP one that I use for the printer, but this one isn’t detected either. It’s a shame because if I could do the scans directly it would be very convenient. I think it’s a bug that no one has ever detected.

OK, I did a check with three Epson scanners and 1 Brother scanner turned on with Digikam 7.10, 8.0, 8.1 and 8.2 (I love appimages). None of them detected any one scanner.

Running Digikam in debug mode always gives the following messages when I click ‘Import from scanner’.

unknown: QXcbConnection: XCB error: 3 (BadWindow), sequence: 3217, resource id: 15071579, major code: 40 (TranslateCoords), minor code: 0

On the KDE Bug Tracker (https://bugs.kde.org/) there are entries when searching for ‘digikam scanner’, but none of them is about the ‘no scanners found’ problem…

@paulmatth,
Avonds, Paul — might you be on a virtualbox?

Hello @Claes , no I’m not.

But I found the solution. The problem is in the AppImages. I installed Digikam via Synaptic (version 7.5) and now the scanners are found and working! Proof:

I didn’t try it but since it’s not an appimage on win10 I thought it would work, but I discovered that the “import from scanner” item is missing from the import menu

I’m sorry but I still can’t find “Digital Scanner” anywhere. I’m on Win 10.

I’m sorry @paulmatth , but I cannot find a “Preference” menu anywhere (I’m on Windows, perhaps it is only available for Linux?). The only “Miscellaneous” I can find contains settings for face detection etc. with tabs for “Appearance”, “Grouping” etc. No mention of scanners

I’m on Linux, so don’t know if the Windows version has it, but this is where you should find it.

By the way, I don’t have an option in preferences to enable the scan feature.

I do, appimage Digikam v8.1.0, under Configure Digikam - Plugins - Generic tab.

Ah, somehow missed it, even though I did look under Plugins.

There are many, many, many things to miss in Digikam!

I don’t see it under plugins:

And I presume that is why I don’t see it under Import

Is this something that is only available on Linux, or must I install a plugin externally?

I would appreciate any help

Piet

The scan function is currently not available under Windows. I believe that the driver is not compiled under Windows and is not compatible with current versions of Windows.

Thanks for the reply @dkdeveloper, at least I can stop looking for it now. Can anyone say if it is planned for the near future?
