Shooting into the sun

another attempt. I did a better job with the sun but the sky is too purple

@dschneiderch - Nice work. The super high contrast between the sun and clouds, combined with the blown-out area of the sun itself make this is a really tough image to fix.

Here is my take with darktable.
I pushed the exposure, aiming for the lower tree on the left.
Then I pulled the highlights back into the range with filmic-rgb, and fine tuned the way the highlights are crushing in the very center with rgb-curve.
I added contrast back with local-contrast and color-balance contrast.
I also changed the white balance in the shadows in the color-balance module.

@arctic - That’s amazing! Great color! I think this image is just too blown out in the center to really fix, but the tree in the lower left, and the sky came out awesome! Thank you very much, too, for the explanation of how you accomplished this. That’s what’s most important to me, is learning which modules to use in dt for this sort of thing!
