I’ve used gimp for a number of years, however this might still be me being an inexperienced user. a lot of the time when im trying to do something to an image, i spend a lot of time trying to find the tool i want to use and the symbols just dont make sense to me in my head. is there a way to display the tool names below the icon? i didnt see an option for this under preferences > interface > toolbox.
That is an interesting thought. You can post a feature request to the developers.
First thing I do is switch to a light theme, I have no real need for considering colour perception issues and anyway the black theme kills my eyes. Also use the old toolbox icons but I do like tool groups.
Not what you want but you can of course edit each icon and add a label. For icons in a tool group clicking on it does give a description.
(now back to undo my editing)
Thank you, yeah I did have the groups displayed which does display the name after clicking on each group, still a lot of clicks when searching for what I need and the icons don’t make sense to me. I switched to the older view to have all tools displayed because I like everything laid out in front of me.
Hello, you are aware of the tooltips that show up when you hover the toolbox? It gives the name of the tool plus a short description of what it does.
yes, but then you have to hover over each tool if you dont know where the specific thing you are looking for is in the first place.
i may start using the drop down menu more often as cedric points out above, as that feels closer to a more efficient way for me to find what i need, though i feel a visual word showing what the tool is would be helpful to me. even my hand tools for working on my car in my garage, i have labels on the drawers which help me easily and quickly access at a glance find the item that i am looking for. i know the tool i need, just not how to quickly drill down to where that might be.
Perhaps this link can be of help, just print it out and keep it next to your pc when you are gimping.
Just press the /
key and start typing the name of the thing you want to use, no need for menu hunting anymore.
thank you, this is quite helpful. i didnt realize this option exists. i did look for like a search box above the toolbox maybe another separate request to improve user experience design. i do like this search capability as it also gives you other aspects of the application and not just to the tool. very helpful
