Shutter Count EXIF

Can darktable (or Gimp or gThumb or … ANY FOSS program read the shutter count of a camera?
It is part of the exif, but …

who knows what?

Exiftool and exiv2 can.

Thank you. Any preferences (like easier to use or the likes)?

someguy@somesys:~/Pictures/2023-02-19_X-T20$ exiftool 20230219-172652-0165-DSCF0885.raf | grep "Image Count"

exiftool -printFormat '$FileName $ShutterCount' *.raw

RawTherapee also shows the shutter count (note: in branch dev and probably also in 5.9 the shutter count shown for my single test image was incorrect, but in branch metadata-exiv2 it was correct).

Just a little heads-up:

What to look for depends on your camera…

The word count seems to be the most common denominator (shutter count and image count) so this will work most often, but can also give you extra irrelevant info:

exiftool -*count* image.name

There’s also the mechanical vs non-mechanical shutter count issue.

Make sure to investigate what is relevant for your specific camera brand/type.

EDIT:

@beachbum : If you are still using a Nikon D810:

exiftool -*shuttercount* nikon.d810.nef

The D810 does not have the mechanical vs non-mechanical “issue”.

Thank you all ;o)

For my Nikon Z6 it is mostly mechanical shutter:
$ exiftool nz6_1874.nef | grep -i count
Strip Byte Counts : 1151400
Mechanical Shutter Count : 3897
Self Timer Shot Count : 3
Shutter Count : 3903
