Looking for a slim Sony E mount camera to go with my pancake lens as a daily EDC camera for photography to supplement my a6300. Want it as low profile as possible while still having at least semi-modern autofocus (so at least the first models with hybrid contrast and phase detection AF). It seems like my options are the Nex 5r, the A5100, or maybe the Nex 6.
The Nex5r and the A5100 seems like the slimmest alternatives, but the Nex 6 also seems somewhat slimmer than the A6000 series cameras, even if it’s still bulkier than the 5 series cameras.
Would a Nex 6 be much slimmer than the a6300? Or should I just get a Nex 5r or A5100? Anyone who has experience with these models?
Well, when it comes to carrying a daily, every millimeter counts. The a6300 is just slightly too bulky for most of my jacket pockets, so just a tiny bit smaller would mean that it’s below the threshold that I would take it with me without being an annoyance.
I guess I’ll just keep my eyes open for any good deals on a Nex 5r, since it’s the slimmest…
I don’t have any experience of the other options, but can confirm that the 5r is a great camera - showing its age a little in resolution and noise performance but still excellent files and the AF is accurate.
Ended up getting a great deal on a Nex 5r in very good condition, after selling the kit lens to mpb I’m counting on only having paid 40 bucks for it, and it still got the screen sticker on it!
The Nex 5r is everything I wanted as far as compactness goes, and autofocus is great for a 12 year old camera.
I was going to say “would a jacket with bigger pockets be a cheaper alternative?”, but then I saw that you got what you wanted for net $40. Well done!
The SG image 25mm f1.8, got it from Aliexpress for 90 EUR shipped. Excellent build quality with weather sealing, smooth turning focus ring. Pretty sharp and decently fast autofocus. Bokeh is pretty busy looking though but it’s a tradeoff I’m willing to make.
No AF button on the back, very limited controls, you only have a function button next to the trigger and a scroll dial by the thumb, really.
