I’m unable to open a few images in RT. I see a preview on the bar above, but the image opens white with red around the outside. I’m new to this software. The file type is NEF. I can open the files in Nikonscan software so I don’t think they are corrupted. I am able to open 90% of my NEF files. I can open the files in photopea. I’ll be looking for another app to see if it can open them. I’m using 5.11.
Is there a common denominator for the ones that won’t open? For example are they in camera crops or similar?
Please attach an affected file here, if possible.
If I understand correctly, these are files from a Nikon file scanner, not from a Nikon camera, right? Are all scanned files affected?
One workaround could be converting them to DNG with the free Adobe DNG converter.
ps: I’ve moved your post to Software/RawTherapee; next time, just start typing ‘rawt…’ into the category search box, it will be offered automatically:
Photopea probably uses the embedded JPEG preview and not the actual raw data, so that doesn’t say much. Try darktable or some other raw editor.
They all were the same; scans from my Nikon scanner that had not been opened after they were created minutes before.
I downloaded darktable, but did not understand it.
they were badly pixelated, so I think you are right
I rescanned the same negatives with my Nikon scanner and they open fine. It must have been a corruption of some sort caused by the Nikon software or my LAN.
In general, digital camera has Bayer sensor, but Nikon scanner has CCD sensor. Therefore, their raw file data is completely different, even they have the same extension name. RT or other raw processors may not be able to handle raw files from Nikon scanners.
Or if you can convert Nikon scanner’s Raw files to dng files with DNG Converter, they may become usable with Raw Processor.
But I’m not sure.
If it’s any help, I owned a Nikon D50 camera which has a CCD sensor. I just opened a NEF file from that camera with no problems.
The important part is not the sensor technology (CCD vs CMOS), but Bayer mosaicked or not.
However, if there are differences in the NEF metadata between the D50 and the Nikon scanner, RT may not be able to handle raw files from the scanner.
RT can read Vuescan DNG files, so if the scanner’s NEF files can be converted to DNG, RT may be able to handle them.
Yasuo, did you see this?
